Rural Development, Livelihoods and Conservation

Dr. sc. nat. Urs Bloesch, Forest Engineer (curriculum vitae), founded in 1995 this Tropical Environmental Consulting Office. He profits from a long-time practical experience in leading positions in the forestry and rural development sector in West and East Africa working for Intercooperation and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Furthermore he was engaged in a major applied research programme about ecosystem studies in East Africa of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH, Zurich). Dr. Urs Bloesch was heading the Expert Group "Environment & Disaster Risk Reduction" on behalf of Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SDC) from 2010 - 2015. Moreover, he has been lecturing at the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Science (HAFL, Bern University of Applied Sciences) in Zollikofen and at the Institute for Communication and Leadership (IKF) in Lucerne, Switzerland and is a guest lecturer at several Swiss academies.
Adansonia-Consulting has carried out numerous studies, trainings and project/programme evaluations in the humanitarian, development and conservation field for UN organisations (FAO, OCHA, UNDP-GEF, UN Environment, UNHCR), the World Bank, state and para-state organisations (Belgian Technical Cooperation, GTZ, SDC-HA, SRSA/MSB), international NGO's (Care International, Conservation International, ICARDA, Pro Act, WWF) and national NGO's (ADAP, ARECO). Main topics included ecosystem analyses, biodiversity and vegetation surveys, environmental impact assessments and management plans, community-based natural resource management, inventory and marketing of wild mushrooms, energy supply for local and refugee communities, environmental restoration and training facilitator. More recently Adansonia-Consulting has been involved in an applied research partnership programme (ESAPP) on vegetation dynamics and in a biodiversity study of coastal forests in Tanzania (CEPF / Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture).
These studies have been conducted in a wide range of tropical ecosystems including savannas, dry woodlands, dry evergreen forests, rainforests, mangroves, and in a diverse socio-cultural and economic context of rural agricultural and pastoral communities.
